I find this all comical. Facebook imo does not “collect” information. People volunteer their information to the site. The site then serves targeted advertising based on some algorithm. This has always been the practice. I just don’t understand the concern here. If you don’t want your data out there then don’t post it. Simple as that.

I do agree however that from the user perspective, Facebook provides little value in return for using your data for targeted advertising. Their timing was right and they executed well and that’s the only reason Facebook is so popular. They really don’t offer any revolutionary value to the users themselves.
