Counting Shorts

I have a question re the subject.

Assume:

1. I have a warrant for x number of shares @ 50 cents
2. I sell x number of shares at 70 cents
3. Later, I convert my warrants and deliver the x number of shares that I sold

When I sold the stock, #2 above, that should count as a short for x number of shares. So, by what mechanism are the total outstanding shorts reduced by my x number when I deliver the stock?
