That Wonder bread trick is a tried and true method to stop water flow in a pipe and I'm kicking myself for not remembering it. The wad of bread would have worked nicely in the second repair attempt as the first try resulted in the discovery of a pin hole leak in the replacement copper pipe. If only I had chosen the other end.

Glad to hear that you got the gasket problem repaired with a bit of ingenuity. If Home Depot can't do it try O'Reilly's.
