It would take a lot to affect the stomach acid levels to the point of being dangerous. You can consume large amounts of baking soda with nothing more than gastrointestinal distress. (IE diarreha or bloating)

Baking soda is a base, ie neturalizes acids. Besides cooking athletes consume it for athletic benefits.

Obviously one doesn't know the exact make up of podras. But similar concept.
