NEWS: WVU student stars in new film, 'Getting Grace'
by Kirsten Reneau

MORGANTOWN — West Virginia University sophomore Madelyn Dundon will be coming to the big screen as the independent film “Getting Grace” prepares to be released nationwide Friday.

Dundon stars as Grace, “a charismatic and riveting teenager with cancer,” according to a press release for the film. “‘Getting Grace’ tells the story of what happens when Grace goes into a funeral home to learn about death, only to end up teaching the funeral director about life.”

Dundon said “Getting Grace” is her first film experience.

“This is a dream. Somebody pinch me,” she joked.

The film co-stars Daniel Roebuck, who also directs the picture. Roebuck has had variety of appearances throughout his career, appearing on everything from “Lost” to “The King of Queens.”

The cast is filled out with Marsha Dietlein Bennett, who appeared in “Woman in Mind” with Helen Mirren; Dana Ashbrook, who stared in the cult classic “Twin Peaks”; Duane Whitaker, who may be best known for his work in Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction”; Diana Wagner; and Alexa McFillin.

A musical theater major at WVU, Dundon said she’s loved her experience at the university e so far.

“I love how I have been able to pursue every single one of my passions in a very diverse environment. I have grown to appreciate scholarship and research more than I thought I would studying performing arts,” Dundon said. “My professors are all so inspiring and so giving of their time and knowledge.”

She called her character, Grace, fearless, spunky, quirky “and a little crazy.”

“Grace wants to ensure that those she loves most are going to be OK after she’s gone,” Dundon said.

Dundon is a Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, native, and the movie was filmed in her hometown, which is also where her co-star is from. There, they shot for 26 days, six days a week, working on average of 16 hours each day. While the work was hard, Dundon remained inspired by her co-star and everyone else working on the film.

“My mother was the costume designer on the film, and it was shot in my hometown, so I was surrounded by friends and family daily. My sister worked on the crew ... it was such a supportive environment,” she said.

She hopes audiences will consider the film a celebration of life, and she hopes to see others inspired, as well.

“It’s an uplifting, hopeful story that needs to be heard, and after touring the movie, I can honestly say that people are touched by it, no matter what age,” Dundon said. “In a day when people feel down, or angry, or stressed out of their minds, this movie is an escape. It’s a back to the basics of life escape.”

However, “Getting Grace” is far from Dundon’s last project. While she continues to audition for other film and television roles, she is also dedicated to her undergraduate studies.

“I write and research my own one-woman plays, so I am currently working on two,” she said. “I am actually performing one I wrote three years ago now at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C., in a couple weeks on Shakespeare’s Birthday Celebration they throw annually.”

“Getting Grace” will be playing at Regal Morgantown Stadium 12 until Tuesday. For more information, visit www.gettinggracethemovie.com.
