the initial patent granted to Edward Widner in 2004 lapsed due to failure to pay maintenance fee back in 2011

However, supposedly, the original technology has been perfected over the years and now with the so-called "plug and play" feature (whatever that really means) developed recently the technology has been improved and should be more marketable
