Review: DEATH_HOUSE: Now Open, Every-Horror Fan Needs-To-Enter-Soon-As-Possible

Death House has been on the radar of every horror fan for some time now. Now that it’s finally time to enter, was it worth the wait?

The horror community has been buzzing for Death House for a few years now. The trailer premiered at the first ever Days Of The Dead Louisville, and we were hooked. The film was quickly dubbed “The Expendables of Horror” and that’s partially right. However, the film is so much more. The plethora of horror icons is just the icing on the cake.

The story goes like this: Two agents tour a maximum security nine level facility called “Death House” where the worst of the worst are held. The security system is shut down and all hell breaks loose. It’s part prison breakout film, part horror film, and is masterfully crafted by Harrison Smith. It’s even more special as it was the last film the late Gunnar Hansen was involved in. The story seems simple at first but the film is much more complex.

You know how you get all excited for a film, you wait a long time, but when you finally see it it’s a huge disappointment? Death House is the exact opposite of that. The hype for this film is well deserved. However I was a little bit confused about Tony Todd’s role. I’m not sure what the character had to do with the facility, if anything. I also wish the five evils and three Satans had more screen time. I think there is a lot more intriguing story there. Perhaps there will be a sequel, or spin off?

Oddly enough, Death House is closer to the content of the song “House Of 1000 Corpses” than the film based on it. With so many horror icons in one film it’s hard for any to stand out, but in Death House, Kane Hodder and Bill Moseley (in his limited screen time) steal the show. The Death House is now open and every horror fan needs to enter as soon as possible.
