Fannie Mae's new national headquarters on L Street will feature a European-style plaza and will bring back the buzz to what was once the home of The Washington Post

WASHINGTON — Carr Properties recently broke ground on what will eventually become Fannie Mae’s national headquarters on the site of The Washington Post’s former home.

WASHINGTON, DC NEWS

The 862,000-square-foot, 14-story building, at 15th and L streets NW, has the potential to transform a section of Downtown D.C. that currently has little to offer office workers in the area.

The new building will be called Midtown Center.

“Midtown Center will be a new hub of activity in the center of the city that will offer a great work environment and a tremendous street level dining experience,” said Carr’s CEO Oliver Carr III.

Midtown Center will actually be two office towers separated by what SHoP Architects of New York calls a “European-style public plaza inspired by the historic L’Enfant city plan.” It will include 50,000 square feet of retail.

The project is scheduled to be finished in June 2018.

Fannie Mae plans to relocate operations from its headquarters at 3900 Wisconsin Avenue and other offices scattered around the metro area to Midtown Center.

Carr Properties already owns 17 office buildings in the Washington area. In addition to Midtown Center, it is also currently developing properties at 2311 Wilson Boulevard and 2025 Clarendon Boulevard in Arlington.

The Washington Post moved from its 15th Street home of 50 years to a new headquarters at One Franklin Square last year.
