Back when my account was still Scottrade, before TD Ameritrade acquired them, stock splits cost me $15.
So TD Ameritrade is more expensive on reog fees, but they're so much cheaper than Scottrade was to trade penny stocks. Scottrade added a 1/2% of the principle amount being traded to the flat $6.95 fee to trade stocks priced below a buck. And that 1/2% really added a lot to the cost to trade a large position. For example, to trade $10k worth of a penny stock it used to cost me $56.95 ($6.95 + (.005 * 10,000)). Now the same trade costs me $6.95, a $50 savings.
I was pleasantly surprised to see TDA only charge the flat $6.95 fee even on penny stocks.
