The staff of Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-TX, is putting the finishing touches on a plan to reform the nation’s housing-finance system, but several lobbyists and trade group officials question what impact the proposal will have.
One trade group executive, requesting anonymity, said bluntly: “I find it hard to get excited about. Whatever comes out is going nowhere fast.”
These stakeholders point to both a lack of bipartisan consensus on reform and the fact the legislative calendar is growing shorter by the day – and in an election year.
One other wild card: Hensarling plans to retire from Congress when his term ends this year. A draft of his plan is expected by the end of March. For more details, see the new edition of Inside MBS & ABS.
