Here's a few links I could find after the announcement. The CEO spoke about it at an Ethereum conference shortly after it makes sense. It happens about 1hr 42 mins into video starts the panel he's involved in (cryptokitties is represented). 1hr 49 min into video he explains that it's almost like staking the artwork - basically if you own it, you can do prints etc of that work.
