They will even borrow, taking out a interest loan to do this. Naturally, anytime a company buys back their own stock it makes the float smaller, thus raising the stock price. So executives have an incentive to get a bonus during that special time of year. GE supposedly did this for years while their R&D languished for lack of funds. The results is history.
