Romeo Langford ruthless on the court, gracious off it — which only adds to the legend

(Won again last night at Seymour---HI and BYE POOF)

This state has great players every year, mega-Division I recruits like Greg Oden and Eric Gordon and Kris Wilkes and all those Zeller brothers, but Indiana hasn’t had a phenomenon like this since Damon Bailey. Langford is the state’s best high school player in years, maybe since Glenn Robinson way back in 1991, and he bolsters that magnificent game with that magical name — Romeo — and a gentle persona that has young mothers handing their babies to him as he stands in his sweaty basketball uniform. And on top of all that, he has patience and maturity bordering on the mystical for a kid his age

New Albany's Romeo Langford named finalist for Gatorade Player of the Year

WLKY Updated: 10:43 AM EST Mar 10, 2018

After taking home the Gatorade Indiana Boys Basketball Player of the Year award on Thursday,

New Albany senior Romeo Langford has been named a top-three finalist for Gatorade's National Boys Basketball Player of the Year award.

Langford is joined on the watch list by Florida's R.J. Barrett (Montverde Academy) and Minnesota's Tre Jones (Apple Valley High School).

The state's top recruit, Langford has averaged 35.7 points, 9.6 rebounds and 3.1 steals per game and led his team to a 23-1 record through sectional play.

Langford is currently the No. 4 scorer in Indiana history with 2,900 points, just 234 points behind all-time leader Damon Bailey.

The 6-foot 5-inch, 170-pound guard has also been named a McDonald's All-American.

The award recognizes not only athletic excellence on the court, but also highlights exceptional academic achievement and character on and off the court. All three finalists have GPAs above 3.0 and volunteer within their respective communities.

Langford is a member of the school’s radio and TV club and volunteers at local youth basketball camps and leagues.

Gatorade will announce its winner in the coming weeks.

Also in the crowd: Archie Miller and IU associate head coach Tom Ostrom, sitting at midcourt behind the scorer’s table with IU signee Robert Phinisee of McCutcheon, who had texted his pal Romeo earlier in the week to say he might be coming. Across the gym, first row on the other side, is IUPUI coach Jason Gardner. Surely there were other college coaches. Maybe even other beauty pageant winners.
