GTC stands for Good-Til-Canceled..this type order will stay open until either you cancel it, or it executes, or it expires at such date in the future either picked by you when you submitted the order or by the brokerage rules if you don't specify a date--TDAmeritrade GTC's expire after 6 months if not executed or canceled...

example of GTC sell:

stock price .50 with a bid x ask of .48 x .50....you enter a limit sell at 1 dollar GTC....that order will stay open until it executes at a dollar, or you cancel it, or 6 months pass and the price never hits your sell and it expires...
