Major gas pipeline project canceled
Monday October 9, 1:06 pm ET

A major pipeline proposed to carry Rocky Mountain natural gas to customers in the eastern and southern United States is "unlikely to continue" after operators in the Barnett Shale basin in northeastern Texas declined to support the project, an El Paso Corp. spokesman said Monday.

The pipeline, called the "Continental Connector," was a 700-mile pipeline proposal to carry natural gas from Kansas to Louisiana that Houston-based El Paso (NYSE: EP - News) announced about a year ago. Existing pipelines from Wyoming to Kansas and from Louisiana to southeastern customers would be upgraded and expanded to handle more gas.

But operators in the Barnett Shale region of northeastern Texas told El Paso they planned to sign commitments with a competing pipeline project, El Paso spokesman Bruce Connery said.

As a result, the project "is unlikely to move forward," Connery said.

That leaves the Rockies Express pipeline standing alone. The pipeline is a $4.4 billion, 1,663-mile project backed by Kinder Morgan Energy Partners LP of Houston, San Diego's Sempra Pipelines & Storage and ConocoPhillips, also of Houston. The pipeline is planned to carry up to 2 billion cubic feet of natural gas a day from northern Weld County to eastern Ohio.

Federal regulators have given preliminary approval to the western portion of the pipeline, from Colorado to Missouri, and a formal application for the eastern route -- from Missouri to Ohio -- is expected to be filed in April 2007.
