I FOR ONE APPRECIATE GENE'S PAST EFFORTS AND CURRENT GENEROSITY IN STEPPING DOWN

Gene gave it is best shot for over a dozen years. He withstood the slings and arrows of detractors and kept his nose to the grind stone trying his level best to succeed when the odds were stacked against him. Only 8% of efforts to create new drugs succeed.

It takes courage to step into the ring when the odds are that low. It takes courage to struggle on to help those who criticise you make a profit. Gene put the shareholders first.

Now, again he thinks of others first. He could have easily stayed on and continued to collect his compensation. But he decided that it would be in the best interests of shareholders to hand the reins over to a new CEO.
