* Alex van der Zwaan, the son-in-law of Russian oligarch German Khan, faces charges of lying to the special counsel's office
* Van der Zwaan allegedly lied about conversations with former Trump aide Rick Gates, and deleted relevant emails
* He is expected to plead guilty Tuesday afternoon
The son-in-law of a Russian oligarch will plead guilty to lying to Special Counsel Robert Mueller's office about his communications with a former aide to President Donald Trump.
Alex van der Zwaan, an attorney and the son-in-law of Russian billionaire German Khan, faces charges of making false statements. The charges were dated Feb. 16 but unsealed Tuesday.
Van der Zwaan allegedly lied to Mueller's office last November about when and how he communicated with Rick Gates, the former Trump campaign aide who was indicted last fall.
Mueller's office alleges that Van der Zwaan failed to disclose conversations he had with Gates and another unnamed person, and deleted emails that were sought by the office.
Van der Zwaan was an associate in the London office of the law firm Skadden, Arps. He was part of a team that produced a controversial report on an imprisoned former prime minister of Ukraine.
The charges follow an indictment filed last Friday charging 13 Russian individuals, and three Russian companies, with crimes furthering an attempt to interfere with the 2016 election.
