It sounds like they are working with actual spiders. In the paper, they compare how spider silk and Kevlar are processed:

"1.3. Process conditions for Spider silk
During web construction spider can produce fibre up to 10 times of its normal rate of 1cm/sec. Water has stronger influence on the stiffness and resilience of the spider silk compared to silk spun into air. The valve at the end duct controls the diameter of the silk.
The variation of temperature up to 30% and humidity up to 70% is acceptable by spiders.[8] The toughness of silk is regulated by the speed of spinning whereas there is no effect on the diameter of the thread. Spider silk may vary at 3 different levels like inter specific, intra specific and intra individual level.

1.4. Process conditions For Kevlar
Synthesis of Kevlar is done in solution form the monomers 1,4-phenylene-diamine(paraphenylenediamine) and terephthaloyl chloride by a condensation reaction which leads to hydrochloric acid as a by-product, which results in liquid-crystalline behaviour, and mechanical drawing position the polymer chains in the fibre’s direction.
Production of Kevlar is overpriced because of the composition arise by using concentrated sulfuric acid, which is required to keep the water-insoluble polymer in solution at the time of its synthesis and spinning. A problem known as UV degradation can be seen in Kevlar, this is the phenomenon the Kevlar is decomposed by the ultraviolet component of sun light, hence it is not often used outdoor without protection against
sunlight."
