I do appreciate the advantages of oral delivery. However, I still think that IPIX may have taken on a very daunting task too early. Oral formulation will add at least these additional bioavailability obstacles to be overcome

- the drug needs first dissolve into GI tract - is it soluble in GI fluids?
- the drug needs to survive in GI tract - does it survive enzymatic and non-enzymatic intestinal degradation?
- the drug needs to get out of GI tract into circulation - what is it's permeability across biological membranes?
- all drugs absorbed from the GI tract are first delivered to the liver via portal vein - how much of the drug does survive the first pass hepatic metabolism?

That is a lot of costly work to do.
