VIRGINIA TECH 49, CENTRAL FLORIDA 28
No. 9 Virginia Tech Wins, and Vick Makes His Debut
By The Associated Press

Quarterback Bryan Randall gave Marcus Vick a tension-free stage for his Virginia Tech debut yesterday, but the No. 9 Hokies had plenty to worry about before they beat Central Florida, 49-28, in Blacksburg, Va..

Randall directed three touchdown drives in three attempts before yielding for a second-quarter series to Vick, younger brother of Michael Vick, the former Hokies quarterback who now plays for the Atlanta Falcons. When Vick, a redshirt freshman, led the team 80 yards for a touchdown, it was 28-0.

But then the Golden Knights, using an effective mix of Ryan Schneider's passing, Alex Haynes's running and a 56-yard trick play, closed to 28-21 before two Hokies touchdowns 39 seconds apart put the game away.

The clinching score came with 11 minutes 32 seconds left, when Schneider threw to avoid a blitzing Vegas Robinson, and tackle Jason Lallis picked off the pass over the middle. He then rambled 45 yards to give the Hokies a 42-21 lead.

By the time Vick trotted onto the field to a rousing welcome from the largest crowd in Hokies history - 65,115 - Randall was 12 for 14 for 169 yards and Virginia Tech was leading, 21-0. Vick rolled right and hit tight end Keith Willis for 14 yards on his first play, hit Ernest Wilford for 14 more on his third play and rolled right and hit Hamilton for 18 to set up Jones's 18-yard scoring run.

Randall finished 22 for 28 for 278 yards. Vick, who later returned to the game, was 7 of 10 for 102 yards, including a 27-yard touchdown pass.

TEXAS 66, NEW MEXICO STATE 7

Selvin Young returned two kicks for touchdowns and Derrick Johnson and Michael Huff returned interceptions for two more as No. 5 Texas overwhelmed visiting New Mexico State in the opener for both teams.

Chance Mock passed for two touchdowns in his first career start. Both went to Roy Williams, who extended his school record with his sixth straight 100-yard receiving game.

Mock's backup, Vince Young, got into the act too, adding a pair of rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

Selvin Young's kickoff return in the second quarter wiped out a 7-0 New Mexico State lead and started the rout.

He also had a 39-yard punt return for a touchdown in the fourth. Sparked by Young's kickoff return, Texas exploded for 31 points by halftime to earn its 20th straight victory at Royal-Memorial Stadium, a streak that dates to 1999.
