In the United States, more than 1.2 million people use cannabis to address various medical problems, ranging from depression to cancer and epilepsy. Despite legalization in various states, cannabis use is currently illegal at the federal level. However, CBD oil made from hemp CBD-rich oils are 100 percent legal to sell in the United States.

The CBD market has been projected to reach between $2.1 billion to $3 billion in consumer sales by 2020—an increase of 700 percent or more from 2016. Additionally, many traditional marijuana users report a willingness to try CBD.

As of September 2017, 29 states and the District of Columbia have laws in place that broadly legalize marijuana in some form. The most expansive laws regarding recreational marijuana use have been adopted in seven states and the District of Columbia. Final rulings are additionally pending in other states for recently passed medical marijuana laws.

In Canada, medical marijuana has been legal since 2001, and Canada's government is currently moving toward nationwide recreational cannabis legalization. Canada's proposed Cannabis Act could go into effect by July 2018, making recreational marijuana use federally legal.

Globally, the medical marijuana market has been projected to reach a value of up to USD $55.8 billion by 2025.
