So Ackman didn't buy another bazzilion shares...

Ackman may not have bought another bazillion shares (only a few here ever acted like he did), but The Growth Fund of America - part of American Funds from Capital Group - did. Sometime in 2017, they accumulated almost as much as Ackman and Berkowitz own together. Actually, (as an example) they own about 3 million more shares of Freddie common than Ackman does, and he owns about 10% of all shares outstanding. They also purchased boatloads of both FnF Pfds.

The Growth Fund of American is not a Hedge Fund, not even close! They obviously did their homework before investing close to - what I guesstimate - $870 million into both FnFs common and pfds. I believe Ackman is only in for about half that amount, if memory serves me right.
