I hear ya, it is much more fun to me to be trading. But to confirm your thesis, I took the time a while back and did a year long back test on two companies (one was XXII and I can't remember the other one) and it turned out that buying and holding was the best option. In order to even come close you had to time every bottom and top perfectly.
Obviously that doesn't include short squeeze plays etc.
