Could the Canadian senate hold it up? I guess they could make some noise about it with so many independants now in the senate. However most Canadians don't even think about a Canadian senate, outside what was learned about it in school. They are political appointees and political hacks. With the U.S. Senate so important to the U.S. political process, it is hard to think of the word Senate without thinking of an important governing body. What you have to think of is the government in England which Canada copied. In Britain there is the House of Commons, which makes all the laws and where head of the government is, the Prime Minister. And the House of Lords, which like the House of Senate in Canada, is really just and old institution. The House of Lords was important 400 years ago, where the nobles in Britain, the Dukes Earls, Barons etc. held power and sat in government. Since the rise of the middle class and democracy in Britain the House of Commons became the governing body, with the Queen and House of Lords, now powerless, and just for ceremony. In fact I think it was 1999, when there was a vote to eliminate the House of Lords which had so much history to it. There isn't that glamour and history to the House of senate in Canada, that the House of Lords has. When Canada became a independent country, Canada copied England with 2 houses. The Commons like in England, and the senate like the Lords, however powerless. I still maintain that some Senate members might try to gain some publicity by talking about it in public, their 10 minutes of fame, however if the senate ever tried to stop any legislation, no matter what, it could find itself, having a vote in the Commons whether they too should be abolished. No one in Canada wants a group of political appointess making laws, or the Senate could find itself having to run for office, which 90% of them would not want to do. It is much to easy to keep their cushy jobs doing nothing. The law will pass, the senate will not interfere, except a few loud mouths spouting off, for their few minutes of fame.
