I've never seen people carrying rifles in the streets.

My trip was almost 50 years ago. I don't remember if anything specific was going on at the time or if any training was being done, but I saw at least a dozen men in civilian clothes with a rifle slung over their shoulder. It struck me as I thought it was unusual hence a vivid memory of it. I was in Zurich visiting my wife's cousin. He explained all about the military and reserves. The same may certainly not be true today.
