GMER based their ranking and rightly so as it's currently ranked 3rd out of over 40k registered servers in the world from the following site

http://www.minecraftforum.net/servers

I found though that the rankings reset every month and is based solely on the # of votes they get from the players. There's a bunch of other sites that do the same system and GMER ranks differently in those as well but always seem to be at the top of the list.

So if players stop voting then they will lose their ranking. GMER though makes incentives for the players to vote daily so they tend to keep up there in ranks. The more player base they get the more votes their going to turn out daily which will hopefully bring more members to the site.

Not sure when those other servers will go online but when they do we'll probably know it.
