As for the term pro bono, allow me to help with that "brush up."

Pro bono is the shortened version of pro bono publico, which means "for the public good."

the beneficiaries (if they can be called that, since they have to PAY for the article) are professionals in the oil and gas industry. Furthermore, I don't think producing articles for a professional organization, in this case, the Society of Petroleum Engineers, is considered being done for the "public good." Dr. Armacanqui, et al., are writing for the benefit of professionals who are willing to pay for Dr. Armacanqui's expertise in order to improve their effectiveness professionally.

THAT is still called, in the 21st century as it was in the 20th, doing someone a FAVOR. It is not "pro bono."

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Dr. Armacanqui declined the "opportunity."
