Thank you! It warmed up to around 50° today. I just spent a few hours outside. I'm getting that itch, lol.

The main drive this fall and winter, is making charcoal to improve the soil.

I dug two pits about 18" wide x approx. 5 ft long. I have a lot of dead wood around to burn, so I'll get the fire going good, then choke it off with a piece of sheet metal slightly bigger than the hole. (it came from a metal shed I tore down when I moved in.)

A day or two later when it cools off completely, I'll clean out the pit and spread the charcoal out over the garden(s). It's a big garden so I'm making a lot of charcoal.

It's getting close to time for ordering the onion sets. Last year, I ordered the walla-walla's, and intermediate sampler pack. One of the varieties in the pack was called "super star." http://www.dixondalefarms.com/product/super_star/intermediate_day_onions I'm still eating on them, and I can't help but notice? The super stars are holding up better in storage than the rest.

I learned another valuable lesson about the onions this year. I harvested them twice. The first batch, I laid out on a fence to dry for 3 days to cure, then tied them up to hang. This is how Dixondale recommends. The second batch, I strung them up right away and hung them in my garage. Eventually, I took them all down to the basement. The bulbs that I dried outside first are lasting much longer.

It doesn't show up that well, in front of the garden is my make shift temporary chicken tunnel.
