With many brokers I think that's true, but Oanda calculates it to the nearest second. So even if you only hold for a few minutes, if the position is large enough you see some cash flow.
One of the things I've been thinking about is entering a carry position near the close of the New York markets on Friday, and then putting a tight stop in when the markets re-open on Monday in the far east (Sunday night in New York). This would provide 48 hours of low/no risk interest.
