It's time to ban pit bulls - they are just too dangerous.

Pit Bulls Maul Woman to Death, Injure Husband in Gruesome Christmas Eve Attack

| Two pit bulls reportedly mauled a Kentucky woman to death and injured her husband during a gruesome attack on Christmas Eve.

The dogs—which belonged to the couple’s neighbor—fatally injured 66-year-old Lorraine Saylor with the attack on her neck, face and shoulder. Her husband, Johnny, sustained injuries to his head, arm and hand, local news station WYMT reported.

As the attack unfolded on Sunday morning, Johnny’s brother James Saylor, who lives next door, heard barking and quickly threw an object at the dogs to distract them long enough so he could get into the house.

“They had my brother halfway out the door, chewing on his arm,” he told WYMT.

Once free, Johnny retrieved a gun and shot both, but killed just one. The other dog escaped, and the Bell County Sheriff’s Department is currently searching for it.

Animal Control will examine the dead dog on either Tuesday or Wednesday, according to WYMT.

Steele was neighbors with the Saylors, describing them as a generous couple.

“They were just a super nice couple, and I can’t even begin to put myself in his shoes. It’s overwhelming the circumstances and what he found,” Steele told WYMT. “She worried more about neighbors and friends than she did herself, as [her husband] Johnny’s the same way. They’re just a very giving couple.”

Investigators discovered that the dogs belonged to Johnny Dale Lankford, who was being held in the Bell County Detention Center on charges of second-degree assault, domestic violence and second-degree unlawful imprisonment from December 22.

After Deadly Pit Bull Attack, Bite Expert Offers Explanation on Why Dogs Would Turn on Their Owner
December 20, 2017

The body of 22-year-old Bethany Lynn Stephens was discovered a mile from her home in rural Virginia, where she had taken her two pit bulls for a walk in the woods last week.

“I have no idea” what caused the attack,” Goochland County, Va., Sheriff James Askew told reporters Monday during a press conference. “I can tell you that since this happened, I’ve spent a significant amount of time researching attacks by dogs of this sort, and while it is not an everyday occurrence, it’s not rare.”

The idea of dogs turning on their master was considered unthinkable and rumors quickly circulated on social media that she had been murdered. But police took the unusual step of showing reporters photos of the gruesome scene to prove without a doubt that her dogs did it.

She had no strangulation marks, but did have bite wounds on her head and rib cage, according to police, who ruled the death was not a homicide. The pit bulls were later euthanized.

Pregnant woman stabs family pit bull to death after vicious attack on owners
November 25, 2017

A pregnant 22-year-old stabbed the family Pit Bull to death after it became vicious and “turned” on its owners Friday.

Sierra Wilson stabbed the dog, named Buster, when it began attacking two other dogs and then its owners when they tried to intervene, the Pinella County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Wilson neutralized the animal to protect her mother, Heidi Cooper, 45, and sister, Meaghan Tokay, 14.

Both Cooper and Tokay suffered multiple puncture wounds and lacerations to their extremities, according to the news release. Cooper was described as being seriously injured.

Wilson suffered minor scratches.

Police found the male pit bull lying dead in the front yard of the family’s home in Safety Harbor, Fla.

A family member told deputies that Buster was usually kept separate from the other pets because of his aggressive demeanor.

Pit Bull Attack Elicits Murder Charge

When James Chiavetta is arraigned today on second-degree murder charges in a California courtroom, he faces the possibility of joining a handful of people in the country convicted on a murder charge where the weapon, essentially, is a dog.

Ten-year-old Cash Craig Carson was killed by a pit bull named Louise and a pit bull-chow mix named Bear — two dogs that a prosecutor says scared even their caretaker in an isolated desert area of Barstow, Calif.

“He intentionally let the dogs loose,” says prosecutor Steve Sinfield. “He knew they were dangerous. That’s why we want second-degree murder.”

Also facing arraignment today are the dogs’ owners, Michael Caldwell and Gilbert Garcia, who are charged with owning a dangerous animal causing death. If convicted, each could get up to three years in prison and fines up to $10,000. Chiavetta could get 15 years to life.

Sinfield is one of the first prosecutors in the state to use a law beefed up last year to allow more severe penalties when animals hurt or kill people.

7-Year-Old Boy Attacked, Killed By 2 Pit Bulls

LOWELL, Mass. (AP) — Authorities say a 7-year-old boy was apparently attacked and killed by two pit bulls in Massachusetts.

The Middlesex district attorney’s office says a preliminary investigation suggests the boy was attacked Saturday in Lowell after entering a fenced area where the dogs were located.

Officers responded to a report of an injured child at the home around 6 p.m. and found the boy dead.

Authorities say one of the pit bulls escaped after the attack. The dog was later captured and has been euthanized. The other pit bull is in the custody of the city’s animal control.

The victim has not been identified.

87-Year-Old Man Mauled To Death By Pit Bull

At a truck company, Eugene Smith answered to the name “Smittie.” He was a man profiled at 85 for still driving a milk truck.

Now at 87 years old, he was mauled by his pit bull while taking down Christmas ornaments.

“At times the dog would climb up in bed with him and sleep with him in bed at night,” said. “He loved that dog, yeah he liked t he dog… he loved animals.”

Animal control says the dog is an 84-pound neutered male that bit Smith on his head, neck and arms.

He had just adopted the dog in May.

“Oh he loved animals,” his neighbor said.

Neighbor, Paul Thomas, says the dog got nothing, but love.

“Mr. Smith is such a kindhearted individual,” the neighbor said. “It’s just a plain shock… he’s a wonderful man.”

Co-workers are trying to make sense of what happened.

“He used to take dog biscuits with him around to the farms and feed the animals,” his co-worker said.

“This is just not something we’d ever expected,” a co-worker said. “Not ever in a million years.”

Smith died at a nearby hospital.

The dog was later euthanized.

Couple Mauled By Pit Bull Both Recovering From Surgery

GLEN BURNIE, Md. (WJZ) — A couple, viciously attacked in their home by a pit bull, is now out of the hospital.

Rochelle Ritchie spoke with family members, who say the injuries were so severe, both needed surgery.

The couple was dog-sitting the pit bull, which is said to belong to one of their children. The dog is now dead and the couple is recovering at home.

On the bottom floor of an apartment building in Glen Burnie, a husband and wife are tending to their brutal wounds after being attacked by a pit bull.

“You hear about pit bulls a lot and all, but I didn’t know the dog, so it’s just sad that it happens,” said Sarah Jiunta, victim’s niece.

Family members spoke to WJZ outside the couple’s home, telling us the bites tore and shred their skin.

Ritchie: “Did it tear tendons or muscle?”

“Yes, he said they were just hanging out,” said Sandy Jiunta, victim’s sister.

The aftermath of the attack left a bloody scene.

“The dog had his hand in his mouth. He tried to muzzle the dog and the dog just continued to bite him and bite his arms up,” said witness, Andrea Barnard.

Witnesses say the dog chased the 57-year-old back to his building. His wife–the dog’s next target.

“Her arm was wide open. One of her arms was wide open. He had gotten both of her arms,” a witness said.

Police were called and found the couple bleeding from severe dog bites.

The dog tried to attack the 53-year-old woman again, but was tased by officers and died.

Pit bull owners in this apartment complex say they were stunned by the attack, and say unfortunately, incidents like this only support the stereotype surrounding pit bulls.

Courtney Lescallett says her nine-month-old pit bull has always been gentle with family, and what happened a few doors down doesn’t change her perception of her own dog, Scar.

“I know I will never give him up ever because we’ve never had any trouble with him. People always say, ‘they’re dangerous, they’re dangerous.’ All dogs are dangerous if you don’t take care of them correctly,” Lescallett said.

The couple did not want to be interviewed. No word if any charges will be filed.

The pit bull was between two and three-years-old.

Elderly Woman Still Hospitalized After Pit Bull Attack

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — An elderly woman from Greektown is fighting for her life inside a hospital after a violent attack by her neighbor’s dog.

Derek Valcourt has new information on the condition of the victim.

Because of the victim’s age and the severity of her injuries, family members are worried about her recovery.

Inside Bayview Medical Center, Athena Neofitou, 78, remains in intensive care in a medically-induced coma after she was attacked and bitten by a pit bull named Blue while she was checking her mailbox. It happened Friday night in the 700- block of Ponca Street, where the 1-year-old dog lives with Henrietta Rouzer and her family.

“I take full responsibility for what happened with this lady because usually my dog is in the house,” Rouzer said.

Rouzer said her children let the dog outside. She disputes claims that her dog dragged the victim down some concrete steps but admits the dog did bite the elderly woman in the face.

The victim’s family members declined to speak on camera but say after a six-hour jaw reconstruction surgery, Neofitou is still in ICU. She’s hooked up to a breathing machine in a medically-induced coma and she could be on a feeding tube for two to three months.

“I feel terrible, I really do,” Rouzer said.

Rouzer feels so bad, she’s even written an apology letter to the victim and her family, saying they are praying for her recovery. They also had a copy translated into Greek.

“I love my dog, but for her, I would not contest [having the dog put to sleep] because if it was me, I know how she feels,” Rouzer said. “So if she would want the dog put down to make her feel better and make her comfortable to come home in her house, in her neighborhood, I will do that.”

The dog’s owners have already been issued three citations from the city, totaling $550. The victim’s family says they’ve already contacted an attorney.

So far this year, Baltimore City Animal Control has responded to 260 incidents of dogs biting people.

2 Pit Bulls Attack Elderly Man, Kill His Little Dog In Lincoln Heights

LINCOLN HEIGHTS (CBSLA.com) — Two pit bulls are now being held by the Los Angeles Animal Services Department after attacking an elderly man and killing his little dog in Lincoln Heights Thursday afternoon.

“I saw these two pit bulls pulling something apart. I thought it was a piece of material,” Frank Carrasco described the mauling he witnessed on Lincoln Park Avenue.

After killing the Pomeranian named Dodger, the pit bulls went after the dead dog’s elderly owner.

“They just attacked him. Just like that. They didn’t growl or nothing. One jumped on the man, and the other came out of the yard and jumped on the man and knocked the man down,” Carrasco recalled.

After calling 911, another neighbor snapped a picture of the victim, Valentin Herrera, 76, still lying on the ground after the attack.

The victim’s grandson told CBS2’s Erica Mandy that his grandfather is in the hospital with injuries to his arm and head and should be okay after surgery.

“He’s diabetic. He has dementia, all this stuff. Every day he walks the dog, nothing happens. They leave the gate open. Dogs come in, just ripped up our dog apart,” Herrera’s grandson, Christian Flores, said.

Animal control officers questioned the pit bulls’ owner and took away his two dogs.

The pit bulls were taken to an animal shelter where they will be quarantined, said Angela Llerenas, an animal control officer with the Los Angeles Animal Services Department.

She said the animals will spend at least 10 days in quarantine until a their fate is decided in a hearing.

“It ain’t the dogs’ fault. It’s the owner for how he raised the dogs,” Flores added.

Carrasco said the pit bulls’ owner should have also done more after the attack. “He didn’t say anything. He just stayed at the fence like nothing happened. He didn’t even come out to help the man on the ground. He didn’t come out at all.”

Neighbors said the pit bulls have scared people before. Animal control officers said they are checking if there have been any previous complaints.

Good Samaritan Helps Man Being Mauled By Pit Bulls

LAKE ELSINORE (CBSLA.com) — A 53-year-old man being mauled by pit bulls in his front yard Tuesday was fortunate to have a Good Samaritan come to his aid.

The unidentified victim was attacked in the 18000 block of Honey Lane shortly after 4 p.m., according to Sgt. Linda Hughes of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies say the victim was trying to break up a fight between his pit bull and his roommate’s pit bull when the dogs turned on him.

A man driving by saw the attack and crashed his van into the victim’s fence to scare the dogs away.

A neighbor called police.

“I just think about it, and it’s sad. It’s a human, you know,” neighbor Carmen Hernandez said. “[The dogs] were just pulling him. I was so scared that I got my dog and came right back, because I had my children in the house.”

By the time deputies arrived the attack had ended, but not before leaving the victim with bite wounds to his face, arms and hands. He was transported to a hospital and was listed in critical condition.

Authorities searched the property for the dogs and came across two women who refused to answer any questions.

Aurielle Branca, 20, and Gloria Osborne, 34, were arrested and cited with interfering with a police investigation.

The victim’s roommate signed over his dog to be euthanized.

Riverside animal services impounded four adult pit bulls and two puppies. Three of the dogs belong to the victim.

Man, Service Dog Reportedly Attacked By Pit Bulls In West Hollywood

WEST HOLLYWOOD (CBSLA.com) — Authorities are looking for the owner of a pair of pit bulls that reportedly attacked a West Hollywood man and his service dog over the weekend.

Billy Lam said he was walking on Fuller Street with his dog, named Crouton, when two pill bulls mauled them.

“They were clamping down on her so hard that I physically punched a dog over 15 times and it finally let go after that. They were literally trying to tear her apart. She has four major puncture wounds on her,” said Lam, who was also bitten several times.

The victim said the pits were not on a leash and that the dogs and the owner fled the scene.

“He just said, ‘Oh, is your dog okay?’ And then just took off,” said Lam.

Crouton, a 12-year-old shepherd sheepdog, provides comfort and assistance for Lam who suffers from anxiety attacks.

She alerts him if he passes out.

“I’m just glad that she’s still alive right now,” said Lam.

The victim filed a report with the sheriff’s West Hollywood station, which is investigating the incident.

Woman, 91, Was Mauled To Death By Her 2 Pit Bulls

HEMET (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say a 91-year-old woman who was found dead in her motel room was apparently mauled to death by her two pit bulls.

Elsie Grace was found dead in her room at a Motel 6, in the 3900 block of Florida Avenue, in Hemet Friday morning.

“The victim had a great deal of trauma to her body,” Hemet police Lt. Duane Wisehart said. “(At) this time, it appears to be a horrific accident.”

Police were called to the motel about noon. An autopsy on Grace, who most recently lived in Desert Hot Springs, is pending, Wisehart said.

Grace and her son were staying at the motel because they were in the middle of relocating and were looking for a new residence in Hemet, Wisehart said. Grace’s son was gone at the time of the attack.

The two dogs were seized by animal control officials and are expected to be euthanized.

San Jacinto Woman Relates Story Of Near Fatal Pit Bull Attack

SAN JACINTO (CBSLA.com) —”I really thought I was going to die that day,” said Bruna Secco, a resident of San Jacinto.

While out for her daily two-mile walk recently, a pit bull attacked her on Commonwealth Avenue, blocks from her house.

The dog bit her legs, taking a big chunk out of her thigh and calves, then he bit her arms. In a fall she broke ribs.

Her family is thankful she survived.

Weeks after her talk, she said she was ready to discuss her harrowing ordeal. “I really thought I was going to die that day,” she said. “After he took a chunk out of my leg, I was screaming.”

Secco’s arms are heavily bandaged in several places. And reports CBS2’s Greg Mills, “you can’t even see her most serious injuries.”

“The dog knocked me down. He broke my ribs. He took a chunk off my breast,” said Secco. “And I was screaming and screaming.”

Initially, no one came to her aid. Finally, she says, a woman stopped and called 911. And then a man came to her rescue.

Jose Oriana, who lives across the street, grabbed a baseball bat and got the dog off of Secco. She believes he saved her life.

Oriana wasn’t available for comment Friday but Mills spoke to his father who said, “The lady came by Monday. She came to say ‘Thank you very much and God bless you'”.

Secco was then taken to the Riverside County Regional Medical Center for treatment of her deep cuts and lacerations.

The dog was taken to the Ramona Humane Society. Secco said, “I begged them not to let that dog out, and to just put him down.”

The dog was euthanized.

Newly Adopted Pit Bull-Mix Attacks Little Boy's Face Within Hours of Adoption; Child Airlifted to Iowa Trauma Hospital
Dog Came to Iowa Via a "Rescue Transport" from Louisiana

The parents of a toddler attacked in the face by a newly adopted dog are suing. On Tuesday, Tyler and Holly Harrison, the parents of 15-month old Lucas Harrison, who suffered severe facial injuries in the March 15 attack, filed the petition through attorney John Frey. The petition alleges one count against the dog's owners for strict liability and two counts against the Clinton Humane Society for product liability, negligence and breach of express warranty.

Three weeks before the attack, a pit bull-mix named Emmet, was on death row at the New Iberia Parish Animal Shelter in Louisiana. On Feb. 22, after social media rallied to "save Emmet," by raising over $300, the dog was "approved for transport."

Emmet was trucked across state lines by NOLA Freedom Transport and delivered to the Clinton Humane Society five days later. On March 15, Ashley Greene adopted the dog and in under two hours, Emmet viciously attacked Lucas.
The petition alleges the Clinton Humane Society sold or distributed the dog to the Greenes and expressly warranted the dog as child friendly.

2017 Dog Bite Fatality: Adopted Out Pit Bull Attacks, Kills Elderly Woman in Virginia Beach
Pit Bull Attacks Woman Same Day as Adopted Out

11/17/17: Five months after a woman was brutally killed by a pit bull her daughter had acquired from a rescue group hours earlier that day, authorities filed charges. Jamie Cochran, the 33-year old owner of Forever Home Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, has been charged with 10 misdemeanors for importing animals without a veterinary inspection certificate, according to the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office. More charges may follow once the investigation is complete.

Prior to killing Margaret Colvin, 90, the pit bull, named Blue, had been returned to Forever Home due to his "reactive" behavior -- aggression and lack of impulse control -- which the rescue was aware of. Tia Walke, the previous adopter, said Blue attacked her adult nephew. She said back then, "I can't control him" and called the experience "very frightening."
Before arriving at Forever Home, Blue had been on death row at the New York City municipal shelter for "biting people."
"She saw her mother disemboweled, virtually, and her mother's arm had to be amputated and her mother died." - Irv Blank, Linda Patterson's attorney
Forever Home did not disclose to Colvin's daughter, Linda Patterson, Blue's history of bites and aggression. Just seven hours after the dog arrived at Patterson's home wearing a shock collar, the animal viciously attacked and killed her mother. Three months later, Patterson filed a $5 million dollar lawsuit against Forever Home. Now finally in November, possibly all prosecutors can do is charge Cochran with importing dogs into Virginia without a veterinary inspection certificate.

22-Year Old Woman Dies in 'Grisly Mauling' by Her Own Pit Bulls

12/18/17: Goochland County Sheriff James Agnew gave a follow up press conference today after a 22-year old woman was mauled to death by her two pit bulls late last week. The news conference was largely in response to the high volume of misinformation that was being disseminated by pit bull advocates on social media after the grisly attack. These deceptions were then bolstered by irresponsible media outlets who spread the rumor-mongering even further.

After securing permission from Bethany Stephens' family, Sheriff Agnew provided more details about her gruesome mauling death, including the observation that the dogs were "eating the ribcage on the body." Bethany's two pit bulls, both male and neutered, were euthanized on Saturday, December 16 at 11:30 am. The dogs' bodies have been preserved as evidence and investigators are following up with veterinarians and laboratories for potential forensic analysis.

The sheriff has vowed to seek criminal charges.

She'd only been married to Eric for about two years. The tribute video has many photos of their lovely wedding. "All who knew and love her are shocked and devastated because of this tragedy. Man Dies in North Philadelphia After Being Attacked by Four Pit Bulls

Philadelphia, PA - A man is dead after being attacked by four pit bulls on Thanksgiving Day in the Hunting Park section of North Philadelphia. The attack occurred just before 9 pm in the 1300 block of West Pike Street in the backyard of a home. Police shot and killed one of the pit bulls; the others fled back into the owner's home. The unidentified man was transported to Temple University Hospital with critical injuries, reports WPVI-TV. He was pronounced dead at 10:18 pm.

Police Chief Inspector Scott Small told NBC10, "He was covered in dirt and mud. So, they couldn't even tell or estimate his age at this time." Janet Walke, who lives nearby, said that just moments earlier she had given the man a plate of food. "I just fed him. I gave him a plate of food," she said. Though it remains unclear why the victim was in the pit bull owner's backyard, police said the victim knew the dogs' owner. Police suspect a medical condition contributed to the man's death.

This attack mirrors the February 25 attack in the Olney section of Philadelphia just a few miles away.
Police responded to a call of a vicious dog in the 5300 block of Rising Sun Avenue. When officers arrived, they found a 21-year old man unresponsive in his apartment with bite injuries to his face. The victim's 8-month old pit bull was found in the room covered in blood. The man was taken to Einstein Medical Center where he was pronounced dead less than an hour later.

The male victim was never identified. Police suspected he suffered a "medical trauma" as well. The cause of death was never released.
A month earlier,
in the Germantown section of North Philadelphia, also just a few miles away, an unidentified 96-year old woman apparently survived a vicious attack by two pit bulls. Police said the woman was found unresponsive with dog bite injuries to her face, head, neck and arms in the 5800 block of Brush Road. She was taken to Einstein Medical Center in "extremely critical condition," news reports state. Witnesses said the side of her face was left "unrecognizable."

Regarding the most recent attack, police shot and killed one of the pit bulls, which indicates the dogs were actively attacking the man. Being found "covered in dirt and mud" is not uncommon after a vicious dog mauling, particularly when it involves multiple dogs. Studies in medical journals consistently report wounds heavily contaminated with dirt, gravel and debris. The dogs pull the victim to the ground and physically drag them through the dirt while biting and tearing off flesh.

Woman Dies of Injuries After Pit Bull Mauling in Mississippi

9/21/17: On September 8, Connie Storey, 62-years old, was savagely attacked by her son's pit bull after she went outside to feed it. According to the dog's owner, Josh Storey, the animal had also attacked him previously. Connie suffered life-threatening injuries that led to the amputation of both of her legs. But Connie was a fighter; she amazingly survived another 12 days before succumbing to her grave injuries.
