I learned by just doing it, so I'm still learning. I only 'buy' calls and puts on stocks that don't have a dividend so I can only lose what I invest.
Some day I'll learn more about selling them but as of now I like to know my risk. It's great for trading momo when previous resistance levels break. Gain/loss % are much bigger on volatile stocks. If the VIX spikes these cheap calls/puts become more expensive. If they expire worthless then nada so I 'trade' them and don't plan on exercising them so I look for calls/puts with lots of option interest (others already in it)
