I think it likely that the lack of profits resulted from two big problems.

1. The mineral resources of the Lucerne mine were too low for economic recovery.

2. The mining operation was substandard - not enough experience, not enough invested in equipment, labor, etc.

The application of the new experimental process to increase the recovery rates at the heap leach suggests a hail Mary attempt to overcome both problems.
