Few NLers plan to purchase pot once legal
Three-quarters of poll respondents say they probably or definitely won’t buy marijuana in 2018

When the purchase of marijuana becomes a legal transaction next year, it appears only a small percentage of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians plan on purchasing pot.

A survey conducted by Corporate Research Associates Inc. shows that slightly less than one-quarter (23 per cent) of the respondents polled in this province say they will definitely or probably purchase, meaning three quarters (76 per cent) insist they probably or definitely won’t be buying bud.

But it appears the younger the respondent, the more likely they are to drop some green on some green as 48 per cent of those between the ages of 18 and 34 will purchase legalized marijuana. Only 16 per cent of those aged 35 to 54 and 15 per cent of people 55 or older say they’ll buy.

“Based on current purchase intentions for marijuana for personal use, the initial results for Newfoundland and Labrador are perhaps lower than what many may have anticipated,” said Don Mills, chairman and CEO of Corporate Research Associates stated in a release. “This is especially the case if current purchase intentions are appropriately discounted to reflect the degree of likelihood of such purchases.”

Results are based on a telephone sample of 400 adults residing in this province, conducted from Nov. 2 to 30, with overall results accurate to within plus/minus 4.9 percentage points, 95 out of 100 times.
