It doesn't even have to be a scam. I don't actually believe Tom wants to keep the status quo, I think he wants the company to become successful. But, just buying into a stinky pinky and holding for better times is an awful investment strategy. Strategy is purely strategy - you pick when you buy and when you sell. It doesn't even matter if the company is successful. The better the story, the better the odds you can make a pile - even if it doesn't do well.
I'll try for $100K/year on BVTK if it continues on its current path. That's more than I used to make working per year. But it's all about timing, and knowing when to get in and out.
