A medical card costs money and you have to renew it every year. As of Jan. 1st that hassle is removed.
Buying MJ illegally is...well...illegal. Having the right connection, dealing in cash, etc. all make it inconvenient.
Being able to walk into a store without any restrictions, or being able to have it delivered to your home, again without the need to get a medical card, just makes it a much more attractive option, even with the added cost.
One final thing. My spouse is a legal permanent resident who enjoys smoking occasionally. She was absolutely against getting a medical card for fear that her name could end up in a database and somehow her resident status could be taken away. Come Jan. 1st, that fear is gone. Guess how many legal residents there are in California. As of 2012, there were 3.4 million, more than double the second highest population, which is in New York. I'm not saying they are all going to start smoking weed, but it is certainly another factor to consider when looking at the potential market.
Just my thoughts, but hey, being able to sit on my couch and order some weed for delivery without needing to deal with extra hassles? In my opinion, that's worth paying extra for.
