Short Interest and Short Volume

Short Interest is stock shares that investors have sold short but have NOT yet covered or closed out. Short Interest reflects short market sentiment regarding bearish or bullish expectations. Short Interest therefore reveals future short market sentiment.

Short Volume is not the same as Short Interest. Short Volume can be deceptive because the MM’s may sell into the market a couple of seconds before they close their position, thus deceptively inflating Short Volume. Short Volume is therefore not as good an indicator of a trend as Short Interest. Short Volume may reveal a bearish or bullish trend but Short Interest gives a much better indication of bearish or bullish sentiment. Short Volume and Short Interest are both valid indicators of future MM’s trends and are NOT inconsequential or meaningless like some investors may claim.
