The bid is a bunch of shorts (shorting thru sure trader) looking to cover.



This is a good point. If shorts were not trying to cover then there would not be as many bids in trying to get shares. This many bidders means there is a serious demand. If there were no demand there would be no bids, regardless of the ask price. Simple.
