AMD Pulls Plug On First-Generation Athlon 64s

AMD Pulls Plug On First-Generation Athlon 64s AMD will "likely" do a die shrink to 90nm on the current Athlon XP design and sell them throughout 2004.

In the article, AMD says it won't make a lot of Athlon 64s until they go to 90nm production, which means about ten months from now.

This means AMD is effectively pulling the plug on first-generation Athlon64s. They'll release them, but it will just be a very expensive, niche product.

We'll talk more about this tomorrow, but we think pulling the plug and extending the XP line is a very, very wise move by AMD.
