My impression is that these differences in core duo, core2duo etc....

Are not as important to the average consumer as they are to so-called "computer sophisticate" consumers. Any recommendation that included the ability to run Windows without the ability to run OS X would be a non-starter.

For those paying attention to really important parts of computer life - such as the ability to bask in the security (real or perceived) of OS X vs. Windows - these may be a lot more important than marginally more horsepower that is not at all needed for the computer tasks for which they will use their purchase.
