So just some info for the board on how CURRENT single site attempts have played out in GYN surgery...and to clarify, I am not a GYN surgeon, I just spend a ton of time with generalists and ONCs. Right now, it is possible to do a very rudimentary, benign hysterectomy and BSO with Davinci’s single port instrumentation on both the XI and the SI, however, it is virtually impossible to do an advanced GYN Onc hysterectomy with node dissection bc the arms cannot articulate enough. For Dr. Burke in particular, having the ability to do multiple node dissections through a single port is HUGE. Maybe this is why he is more excited.
In regards to where SPORT will be an advancement for Dr. Advincula and other generalists, would be in endometrial cases, patients with tons of adhesions, and Myomectomy procedures. Myomectomies are bread and butter for Davinci, but I have yet to see a successful single port from Davinci bc it is too hard to articulate the arms. The surgeons I work with always go multi-port. SPORT is going to be HUGE for GYN...YUGE
