No, MM's are not traders, that is strictly illegal. They are more like dealer brokers. They buy from sellers only when they have buyers, and sell to them.
MM's do have one additional use - when stocks are no bid, they do bid and sell to each others. That's where the name 'market makers' comes from, in fact. They make a stock look like it has activity even when it doesn't.
But it is flat wrong to state that MM's trade (buy and sell) for personal profit. The SEC would have them out of business in no time.
