Yes they are not long forever,,, they all have expiration dates.

So for example I have a cousin in a pharma company who holds options. The expiration date has since passed two years ago but he's waiting for the price to increase more before selling. Two weeks before every earnings call,,, they are all locked. 2 Days after earnings they unlock and are able to to what they want. This keeps employees from getting into legal trouble.
