H Bear: wow, you really are in the music scene. Me, I just listen but can't play a lick of anything. 
Your story reminds me of my much younger days when we'd drive into NYC to see Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers (junkie, sadly but he did use the Heartbreakers name first!!!!) at Max's.
On a good day, they rocked it. We were so pumped up from the first set that we'd hang for the second set (like at 3 a.m.!) and he'd come out fried like bacon. You just never knew.
And, by that time, for us to even notice means he really was in a bad way! LOL!
