iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (VXX)

Can any VXX historians comment on past short term spike up action (big spikes). Looking at the weekly or monthly charts doesn't reveal much to me on short term spikes. What are the magnitude of past spikes (50%, 200%)? Are they interday or longer? I see in the monthly chart at the end of 2011 the last decent, long-lived spike. Given the splits I cannot discern what % up that was but seemed to take 2-3 months to peak and then 4-5 months to retrace. Any discussion is appreciated. Thanks.
