I have a rule that when a stock is up 500% (5-bagger), 20% of it gets sold. That returns my investment, and lets the rest ride free. You would be surprised at the different decisions you will make when you are riding free shares vs watching your investment shrink. On a real strong stock, if it looks like it will hit a 10-bagger, I wait and sell 10% instead. Same result.
My number one rule: Get your money back out ASAP. My other big rule is to not even buy if there isn't a strong potential for a 10-bagger. That keeps me out of losers, mostly. I didn't follow that rule with NECA, which cost me. Lesson learned...it never did look like a 10-bagger. I let the association with ONCI sway my decision...I bet there are others stinging from that decision too...
