Before HFT algos, the scammers were limited to simply shorting. The algo manipulation and fake trading brought it to a whole new level that involves far less risk, and is a scourge on the entire sector. It costs biotechs so much more money to succeed now because it essentially steals equity in the form of a large hidden capital raising tax.
