They can always take out student loans, you can never makeup the lost investment opportunity. Thats how my wife and i see it. If we can pay for college if and when the time comes, we might but not at the cost of our retirement!

That said - i dont mean to tell you how to spend your money, just playing the little red man on your shoulder.
