America's newest reality based TV show centred on Motorsport; "America's Top Driver" will have triple NASCAR Champion Cale Yarborough serving as one of its directors.

The Idea Sports Entertainment Group will produce the new show, which will see wannabe racers pit themselves against one another for the chance to race head to head with a recognised Motorsports superstar for a prize of one million dollars. Yarborough will also serve as an analyst on the show.

"America's Top Driver is one of the most interesting, and compelling racing series I've ever seen," commented Yarborough. "I think it's great. For a young driver to have a chance to race in great equipment, on a big-time racetrack, with a chance to go head-to-head with a superstar for One Million Dollars . . . I wish I could jump in the car myself.

"Aside from the whole excitement of the series, we might just find that next Richard Petty or Dale Earnhardt. A lot about racing is being in the right place at the right time. I know that first hand. Racing has been very good to me, and if this series could be the right place, and the right time for a young driver, then I'm all for it. I just think it could be a great and entertaining racing series that we could do year after year."

Yarborough is a giant in stock car racing and brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to America's Top Driver. He won 83 of 558 races, an impressive 14.87 winning percentage. His 83 wins are fifth on the all-time list. He also won 70 poles, third on the all-time list.

While winning more than $5 million in prize money, Yarborough accomplished some other impressive statistics. He's the only driver to win the NASCAR Grand National (now NASCAR Nextel Cup) championship three years in succession (1976-78), and the only champion (1977) to be running at the finish of every race.

In 1987 Yarborough formed Cale Yarborough Motorsports, which competed in the NASCAR Winston (now Nextel) Cup until 1999.

Idea Chairman & CEO, William C. Morris added: "Landing a legend like Cale Yarborough in this capacity is a great start for us. I'm excited about his initial passion and enthusiasm regarding America's Top Driver. I look forward to working closely with him on this project, and other Motorsports projects that Idea has in the works."

Revved up over new deal
ABC, ESPN join NASCAR's ride

By Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff | December 8, 2005

NASCAR welcomed old partners back into the fold yesterday, announcing that ABC, which aired races in the 1960s, and ESPN, which did so in the 1980s, will be part of an eight-year television package starting in 2007. NASCAR chairman and CEO Brian France would not confirm the value of the deal, worth $4.48 billion according to the Associated Press, during a conference call.

Under the new deal, Fox will air the first 13 Nextel Cup races of each season, including the Daytona 500. In previous years, Fox and outgoing network carrier NBC, which have both failed to post a profit under the current package, had alternated rights to the season-starting event. Longtime NASCAR carrier TNT will broadcast six straight races starting in June, and ABC and ESPN will carry the final 17 races of the season, including all 10 events in the Chase for the Cup.

If the 2007 schedule remains the same as next year's, the July race at New Hampshire International Speedway will air on TNT. The September NHIS race, the first of the 10-event Chase, will be shown on ABC. Bob and Gary Bahre, owners of NHIS, were unavailable for comment yesterday.

''When we started out with our consolidated package in 2001, there was always a question mark of could we become a franchise sport for our broadcast carriers," France said. ''No matter what happens, we've certainly proven that we can. With our new arrangement, there's much to build on and we look forward to the future."

France said the current disbursement structure will most likely not change. The tracks will receive 65 percent of the television revenue, race teams will receive 25 percent, and NASCAR will claim the remaining 10 percent. Earlier this year, Bob Bahre said he did not plan on using revenue from the new contract to add seating to the Loudon track, concerned that additional traffic would upset local residents.

While viewers and advertisers have become familiar with watching Cup races on Fox and TNT, they'll be reintroduced to ABC and ESPN. George Bodenheimer, president of ESPN and ABC Sports, called the 10-race Chase a crown jewel in the sports world that will be a major asset for Disney. The Busch Series will also be part of the new TV deal, as ESPN2 will carry most of the season starting in 2007.

Ed Goren, president of Fox Sports, said having the exclusive rights for the Daytona 500 will benefit the network.

''We said this when we started [in 2001] that we felt that NASCAR was an important product," Goren said. ''The reality is that it took a couple years for Madison Avenue to buy into that. Over the last five years, our regular-season ratings have grown by 20 percent. We came off our highest-rated season ever, averaging a 6.0 rating. If you look at the Daytona 500, we didn't sell out our first year. But in the last five years, the Daytona 500 has averaged a 10.5. In '05, we had 35 million viewers. It was seen in more homes than any NASCAR race in history. We did a 10.9 rating. It's taken awhile for Madison Avenue to catch on to what we believed five years ago."
