I think they did it this way for at least 2 reasons. First, they had planned for a third quarter announcement, and they are missing that by one day. They did not want to leave investors hanging. Second, in my (somewhat hopeful) opinion they have something good to say and wanted to have a pre-announcement to set the stage for a Monday release.
