When I was 11 my dad went out to the store to get cigarettes and didn't come home that night.

My mom seemed inexplicably blase about it while I was worried sick. I put up flyers all around my nieghborhood with his picture on it. I kept telling myself "by my birthday dad'll be back" then it was "by the first day of school next year dad'll be back" eventually, for my own sanity, I picked a date. I said if dad isn't home for Christmas, I'll accept that he's not coming back.
